A young centurion ventures among the hostile tribes beyond the Roman Wall to recover the eagle standard of the Ninth, a legion which mysteriously disappeared under his father's command. This is a great historical fiction which does a good job revealing the life and culture of Britain during the time of the Roman Empire.
We discovered this book through a recommendation of a 15 year old friend who said it's the best book he ever read. His all time favorite. I really enjoyed it too - lots of action and history rolled into one.
